The Mission of the Church

At the time Jesus gave the Great Commission the disciples were still reeling from their crisis of faith. Despite the fact that Christ repeatedly informed His disciples about the cross, a suffering and dying Messiah didn't fit their worldview. Up until the moment of Jesus' apprehension, the disciples were looking for a political Messiah and an earthly Kingdom. In the Great Commission, Jesus makes it clear that they are recruiting disciples for a heavenly kingdom. The disciples had a problem with assuming that their agenda was God's agenda, a problem shared by many Christians of all ages.
