Paul uses several phrases for the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit. We are to be “filled with the Spirit,” “walk in the Spirit” and “led by the Spirit.” In Scripture, the Holy Spirit and God’s Word are inseparable with the Spirit working in and through the Scripture. In Ephesians 5:18, Paul gives the command to "be filled with the Spirit." In a parallel passage in Col 3:16, the command is to "let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly." To be filled with the Spirit is to come under the controlling influence of God's Word, activated in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
