The Remarkable Boy Jesus Pt 3 11/27/2011

Luke 2

When Jesus was discovered in the Temple at 12 years old, He told His mother, "I must be in my Father's house." Some translations have "be about my Father's business." Both translations are acceptable for they are simply different emphases conveying the same idea. In ancient times, vocational enterprise was headquartered in the home. With this statement Jesus is effectively saying, "God is my Father, not Joseph and His redemptive purpose is my vocation, not carpentry." Also, the fact that Jesus moves forward from this incident by voluntarily submitting to Joseph and Mary is a lesson for everyone about honoring those in positions of authority.
