This sermon draws a parallel between the crowd in Mark 6:53-56 and Martin Luther's pre-conversion spiritual condition, using both to illustrate the danger of insufficient faith. The people of Gennesaret sought Jesus exclusively for physical healing, just as Luther initially sought Jesus as a means to personal peace achieved through his own righteous efforts. Neither recognized their true and deepest need. Genuine saving faith must be directed at the whole Christ of Scripture, the one who redeems, sanctifies, and clothes sinners in His righteousness. Drawing on Luther's own account of his conversion through the living Word of God, the sermon calls the congregation to examine the object of their faith and to rest in the finished work of Christ alone.
