The Superlative Day of the Lord

The superlative day of the Lord is the advent of Christ. On the distant horizon, Joel sees this coming day. What wasn’t clear to the Old Testament saints is that this day would come in two stages, separated by a protracted period of time. Joel saw this as one picture. Joel 2:28-29 refers to the fulfillment of the outpoured Spirit at Pentecost. 2:30-31 portray the wonders in heaven and on earth at the end of the age. 2:32 ties the two scenes together, promising that, with the coming of the Spirit, all who call upon the Lord shall be saved and escape the wrath of God on the great and awesome day of the Lord.
