Those Whom the Lord Calls

The life and ministry of the 16th-century Reformer, Martin Luther, is reflected in Joel 2:28-32. Early on, he despairs of life as he searches for a way to escape the coming wrath and survive Christ’s return (v. 30-31). Coming to an end of himself, he calls on the name of the Lord (v. 32a). Through study of Scripture, he realizes that he called upon the name of the Lord because the Sovereign God had first called him (v. 32b). After conversion, he is filled with the Spirit and boldly proclaimed the Word of the Lord (v.28-29).
